The official says the balloon entered US airspace “a few days ago”. Fighter jets probe the balloon when seen over Montana. This was followed by talks between high military officers. “The balloon was currently well above commercial air traffic,” said Pentagon spokesman Pat Ryder. He was not a military or physical threat to the people on the ground. The official told news agency AFP that China has sent surveillance balloons over the US in the past and has raised the issue with officials in Beijing. “We have informed them about the seriousness of the issue. We have made it clear that we will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the people on our soil.
